O man, that is not good, do not drive the car anymore, it sounds like you have a valve train issue like the camshaft actuator, balance shaft or a roller follower, you need to lift the hood and see if you can tell the area of the engine noise, front, middle, under or rear of the engine. That way we can pinpoint the problem, can I ask if the check engine light is on? If so we need to get the codes which can help as well. This video will help.

Has any work to the engine been done recently? thanks for the videos they helped. Ken

The engine is having an issue and if you keep driving it while it is spreading metal throughout the engine it will be ruined. FYI. The P24C7 code has nothing to do with the engine noise. I would remove the valves cover on the drivers side and do an inspection. I would think you will find a broken valve spring or a bad roller follower. Once the valve cower is removed please upload an image or short video so I can see it.

So the sound is coming quite high up, middle of engine (nearer to drivers front wheel - right) - There are some metal shavings on the aux belt.

Yep, we need to remove the valve cover on the driver side for inspection.

Seems to be the alternator causing the rattle.

Hmm,, that could be but I would remove the drive belt and start the engine briefly to see if the noise is still there, please let me know. Thanks for the video.
