Push-rods

Short ones are for intake and long are for exhaust. But, if you do not know which ones came from where and the rockers have been moved around, do not be surprised if you see a lot of wear between the parts.
Coat them with a good glob of break in lube and hope they do not fail.

Do all the long one's go in the back slots and all the short one's go in the front slots ?

I managed to get this part done, But now I have another problem, It is running rough and blowing white smoke, it will not go past 4 rpm's with out smoothing down, What is going on ?

Sounds like a blown head gasket or water leaking into the engine. That is what causes white smoke. What was it originally taken apart for?

A broken intake valve push rod. But after running for awhile it has quit smoking but it is still idling rough but when I give it a little gas it runs fine as long as I do not take it up to 4 rpm's If I take it up to 4 rpm's it smothers down. I noticed it was low on water so I added a gallon jug but I noticed it is starting to run hot after running just for a minute are two it never did this before. Why is it Smothering down and running hot ?

Like I say there is no white smoke anymore, But even if you can't see it their is a o strong a odor of Carbon Monoxide coming from it that you can't stand to stay around it and every once in awhile a tinging sound.

Smothering down is normal in neutral the computer will not allow the engine to rev above 4 to help the engine to not be damaged.

The rough idle I feel is the concern. Lets go back to basics and make sure the compression is good all around.

Thanks for this. Could the spark plugs cause this same problem, I have no idea when they were last changed. It has always cranked and ran well, so I gave them no thought.

Plugs could cause rough running. High fume level sounds like the convertor is getting hit with a lot of fuel.

What is causing to much gas to get to converter and what do I need to do to fix this ?

I have noticed that in the related section that their are a lot of people having problems with their push rods. Is this a Pontiac issue ?

The engine rough running is why you are getting the smell. It's from misfiring in the cylinders dumping extra fuel into the converter. Once that is repaired it should be better.

Thanks for all your help. I had a test ran today and it shows a bad MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure ) Sensor. I purchased a new one, When I have the old one replaced with this new one I will let you know if this does the trick..

Nothing Happened, there is no difference in the new one from the old one. there was a mechanic in the parts house and he took time enough to do a little checking for me, and he says he believes I have a vacuum leak some where.

Vacuum is what controls the MAP so if there is a leak it can cause the MAP readings to be wrong. Easy way to look for a vacuum leak is to GENTLY spray some starting fluid along the hoses and intake and listen for the engine to speed up. Just don't spray a lot at a time, you don't want to have it running along places. It could "find" a leak if it runs to a spot you haven't sprayed yet, then you think the leak is where you just sprayed.
Another way is to spray water around and listen for it to be sucked in, this way works fine as long as you don't drown the engine. An easy test bottle for this is a soda/water bottle with a small hole in the top. Use it like a squirt gun to spray things.

The hose that plugs into back of the motor and the other end plugs into top of large hose that goes to air filter has a bad fitting that goes into back of motor and keeps coming out of hole, so I took it off just to see what would happen and there was no change in the rough way it was running.

There wouldn't be a change if it leaks and you remove it. That just makes the leak worse.

Most likely item number 3 which is a fresh air hose for the PCV system.

If it is broken or loose it is a vacuum leak. It is the tube that let's fresh air get into the engine so the PCV system can work.
