there is a fill plug for the trans. the drain plug has a small plug in the center. remove the small plug only and fluid should seep out. if not add as needed till it seeps out. then see if it goes into gear.

Your 2004 Explorer does NOT have a conventional transmission fluid dipstick to check level with. It uses what's called a two stage drain/fill plug. If you remove the entire plug, you end up draining the pan. So, to remove the fill plug, use a 7/8" backup wrench holding the drain plug, while loesening to Torx TX-30 inner plug. Use ONLY Ford Mercon V fluid.

Recently the truck has begun to beep when ever we hit really big cracks in the ground. My sister asked a friend who is a mechanic who informed her it is the transmission and that there is no way to check fluid levels for this particular model that it has to be checked via dismantling the ignition case. Now the engine check light flashes and we are not sure whether they are connected or not? How do we check the fluid level and top off if needed?

As a 1st step I would have the codes checked
check engine light flashing is a sign of a engine misfire
get it scanned for codes will help pin point the troubled area

When im driving down the road & it's time to shift gears, my car has trouble shifting & i have to let off the gas a little bit so it can catch up & shift gears. Is something wrong with my transmission? I just bought the car about a week ago & it doesn't have a dip stick to check the transmission fluid so I don't know if it could be low on fluid or not. I have an appointment on Friday, February 5th to take it to the Ford dealership & they're gonna service it for me...new fluid, new filter..you know the drill. Can anyone help me figure out what is wrong with my car?!? I know I have the appointment tomorrow but i'm anxious to get some kind of idea what might be going on. I really don't wanna spend $1200+ on a new transmission. What are the symptoms for a transmission failing? What are the symptoms if it just needs Transmission fluid or a new filter?

If you have to take your foot off the gas to make it shift, chances are you have a bad shift solenoid. Has the check engine light ever come on?

You are correct; they don't have a stick. You check the fluid from the bottom of the trans pan. first you let the engine run until the fluid gets to operating temp. Next, on a flat surface from under the car using a T30 torx, remove the plug in the bottom of the pan while the car is running. The fluid should only drip as the car runs. Remember that the plug is a torx. If you remove the whole plug, you will drain all the fluid.

there is no dipstick for he transmission fluid! ford made it difficult for the fluid to be changed and checked because it is only needed once or twice in the car's lifetime.

Here are diagram to help you see how to check the fluid which is basically fill it up until to pours out like a manual trans.

Check out the diagrams (Below)

Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers
