I am thinking of buying a car and one of the issues the current owner mentioned was that the power steering went out but is still drivable. I am curious what the possible problems could be aside from the pump going out and how to determine if that is in fact the issue. And if it is the power steering pump, I could use some step-by-step details about how to do it myself if possible.

Hi,

In most cases, it is the pump. However, there could be a failed power steering hose (leaking), the rack and pinion gear may be binding internally due to wear, low fluid, a loose pump pulley, and so on.

I attached the directions for removal below. Take a look through them and let me know if you have any questions.

Let me know.

Thank you so much! That doesn't look to be super complicated, so I am thinking I could do it okay. I appreciate your time!

Hi,

You are very welcome. Have you confirmed it is the pump? I wouldn't want you to replace it only to find it was something different.

Let me know.
