So, the belt on my SUV came off. I put it back on, but the power steering is hard like really hard to turn. The brakes go all the way to the floor and the rod is slipping. The belt comes off but doesn't brake when I turn.

Hi,

As far as the belt, the power steering pump is turned by the serpentine belt. If the belt is loose, the belt automatic tensioner must be bad.

In pic 1, is the circled item where the belt is coming off? If that is the case and the belt is loose, I suggest replacing the belt tensioner.

The last three pics below are the directions for the removal and replacement of the belt tensioner.

As far as the brakes, I have a request. I need you to start a new post related to the brake problem. We try to keep the topics specific to one topic, so it is more helpful to others. I hope you understand. Simply copy and paste that section of your question to a new post.

Here is the link to start a new one:

Also, if the pedal is going to the floor, make sure the brake fluid is full. If it is, the brake master cylinder is likely the problem. However, we can do a couple of tests on the new post.

Let me know what you mean by the rod is slipping. What rod are you referring to?

Take care,

Joe

Okay, there is like a pully rod I think or some kind of arm with a spring inside. I'm a mom of 4, and I'm going off what my dad said. So, bear with me but it is loose or possibly broken. I'm not sure exactly what they mean. If the tensioner goes would that cause my brakes to do that?

Hi,

The tensioner would cause the belt to fall off and most likely for the belt-driven accessories to not function properly.

I would say it's unlikely that it would cause the brake light issue.

Could you get a couple of pics of the rod you are referring to and upload them for me to see? It would be helpful.

Let me know.
