power steering not working properly

Hi,

When the vehicle is moving faster, the steering by nature is easier to turn, so I'm wondering if the problem still exists but becomes less noticeable.

When you are stopped, do you have any assist whatsoever? Is the power steering belt in good condition and tight? Is the fluid full and clean? Is there a whining sound from the power steering pump?

Let me know as much as you can. Also, let me know if anyone has added fluid that may have resulted in the condition and what it was.

If the fluid is dirty, you may want to consider flushing it to see if that is at all helpful. Here is a link that shows how it is done:

it does whine when moving slowly like for example backing up and turning around. When I got the car at 21,000 miles, the power steering did not work. I put in a new power steering pump. The car has 30,000 miles now. I am having a hard time believing the pump is gone again. It never went dry during this time.

I totally agree with you. It shouldn't be bad already. Was the replacement pump new or remanufactured? Also, have you tried servicing it? Does it act the same way as it did with the original pump?

When I got the car, the pump didn't work at all. The replacement is an aftermarket rebuilt unit. And it worked fine for 9,000 miles. pump doesn't make noise unless you're trying to steer at very low speed. I tried putting it in neutral and revving motor up, but it makes no difference.

By chance, does the fluid indicate the system may be dirty? If you are getting a whine from the pump, either it is working harder than it should or the pump is going bad.

Keep in mind, when you are moving, the assistance from the pump is lessened. Therefore, you have a much better chance it won't make noise.

I suspect the new pump is failing. Also, if there is excessive dirt in the fluid, I would flush the system prior to replacing the pump. Otherwise, the same thing will likely happen again.

By chance, is the pump still under warranty? Often times they come with a lifetime warranty.
