I used some Dawn dish soap mixed with water on a paper towel to clean my steering wheel and some of my dashboard, and stereo, however from what I have been reading I have come to the conclusion that was not the safest decision as Dawn dish soap can be abrasive as well as containing potentially harmful chemicals. I am thinking about getting a new steering wheel at the very least.

I do keep my car ventilated as much as possible, which I would think is a good step in combating potentially harmful toxins that I may inadvertently exposed myself also.

Hello,

Using any detergent that is not made for a vehicle's interior can cause damage to the surface. It can remove paint or break down materials.
However, I'm not sure about any toxins that can get released. As all these vehicles use materials that are safe for consumers even in the event of damaged surface or deteriorating components.
Even if the dish soap did damage to the surface it is not likely to release any toxins.

Let me know of any questions.
Thank you.

Do you have suggestions for cleaning a steering wheel using natural products? My grandmother's steering wheel cover smells, so I am looking to take it off as the smell gets on my hands even using a cover on top of it. It smells like a combination of some sweat, soap and maybe some of the air freshener she keeps in the car.

You can simply use soapy water and a microfiber towel to clean just about any surface of the vehicle.
There are many quality products that can be purchased from your local auto parts stores for interior cleaning that are safe to use.
The main thing to remember that you allow everything to dry properly to get the best results.
