Hi, I stop at the red light and when the light turns green the engine races at 3,000 RPMs for the car to barely reach the 45 mile per hour speed limit but when the vehicle speed stabilizes at 45 miles per hour the engine rpm go back down to 1,500 RPMs and stabilize, I heard that the CVT transmission is electronic and has a transmission range sensor and a vehicle speed sensor, could either of those sensors or both of those sensors be malfunctioning? I also heard that the CVT transmission has a metal belt that connects the CVT transmission's drive parts to its driven parts, could that metal belt be the culprit for the poor acceleration? Could the torque converter be the culprit? It's a sealed unit and so I can't check the CVT fluid. Thank you in advance for your information. Alex Stathas

There could be a number of reasons for poor acceleration after a complete stop at red lights, including the issues you mentioned with the CVT transmission and its components. The CVT transmission range sensor and vehicle speed sensor are responsible for communicating the speed of the vehicle to the transmission control module, which in turn determines the optimal gear ratio for the engine and transmission. If these sensors are not working properly, it could lead to the issue you're experiencing. Additionally, a malfunctioning metal belt or torque converter could also cause poor acceleration. Are there any trouble codes?

This guide can help get the codes:

Also, I would change the transmission fluid and I have included the location of the output speed sensor and the gear range sensor so you can check the wiring or replace the sensors.

Fluid Types

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) Fluid (If equipped)

Type .................... Genuine NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-3*

*Use only Genuine NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-3. Using transmission fluid other than Genuine NISSAN CVT Fluid NS-3 will damage the CVT, which is not covered by the NISSAN new vehicle limited warranty.
Capacities

Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) Fluid (If equipped)

Capacity .................... 7-1/4 qt (6.9L)

Let us know what happens and please upload pictures or videos of the problem, check out the images below.

I looked at the AutoZone website and I found out that this vehicle has two vehicle speed sensors for its CVT transmission, it has a smaller input vehicle speed sensor and a larger output vehicle speed sensor but I never saw a transmission range sensor, Auto Zone also has a bunch of whole transmissions for this vehicle on its website that have the torque converters in front of them in the AutoZone website pictures and their prices range from $2,800 dollars to over $4,000 dollars and the AutoZone website calls them rebuilt transmissions or remanufactured transmissions whatever the terms rebuilt or remanufactured mean or signify, if the part alone is over $4,000 dollars then it must cost over $6,000 dollars to have it installed, the long ago days when a used car was merely $1,000 dollars are long gone now so I will have to live with poor acceleration because I don't know if the Nissan dealer will agree to change the CVT fluid on a malfunctioning transmission as they already refuse if the CVT transmission is already malfunctioning and they demand that you have the CVT transmission rebuilt first, but when the traffic light turns red it makes me very nervous and very jittery because I know that the car will have a hard time getting back up to speed, Mister Ken I see that you are from the administration of 2carpros.com and 2carpros.com is based in California and at least here in Florida I won't have to worry about a smog test just the poor acceleration and the rough engine idle when the air-conditioning is turned on to which Jakob and Nicholas responded in thorough details. take care Ken, Alex Stathas

Yep, we are based in California, and I have to say the CVT transmission has been an issue for many years. Here is the location of the additional speed sensor if you want to give it a try. Please let me know what happens.
