I have a Bosch remanufactured starter approx. 2 years old. The starter will turn the engine over with no problem with NO spark plugs installed. With any ONE spark plug installed, the starter will engage and try to turn the engine over MOMENTARILY and then kick back out. The starter brushes, commutator, bearings, gear & flywheel gear are all O.K.

I say replace the starter motor could be the clutch is slipping -it should be able to crank the engine over with or without the sparkplugs-
