Engine Mechanical problem

i drove in the drive one day when i had noticed that the engine was overheating so i poped open the hood quickly after turning the car off and watched the coolant running right out of the coolant tank.i let it sit for about 45 minutes fild the coolant but when i went to drive down town i noticed the hotter the engine got the low end knock got louder.do you think that it could have been caused by the overheating and coolant loss and even though the first thing i think is it damaged the engine but could the knock be coming from the tansmission.the sound always becomes intensified when i excelerate but when i sit and idle the car the engine seems to run fine with no knock.
