Windshield Wipers not working

Hello, my windshield wipers are not working anymore! Which makes driving impossible in all the snow and rain. The motor seems to be working, because sometimes the blades will slowly move across the windshield with a noisy shudder. Sometimes they will just stop, seize up in mid-wipe. I can usually push it back down, and sometimes it starts up again, but this time it has not.
What is most likely wrong with my car? Do you have any tips/ suggestions for a cost-effective fix?

If the wiper blades are moving slowly and sometimes not working at all, it is most likely the wiper motor going bad. It may still work for a little while longer but eventually it will seize up altogether and not be able to move the blades at all. Since you stated that this time the blades have not started back after they seized up, I would say the motor has completely shut down.

Hello, thank you for your help! I figured it was the motor, but was not sure.
My car seems pretty basic, so I would love some detailed instructions on how to change it, and how to find the right motor? Thanks!

Okay, no problem. If you mean where to purchase the motor at, you can purchase it at most any auto part store. I researched them a little for you and found the average price to be around $65.00 including a core charge. The core charge (you giving them your broken motor) will be around $15.00 so the total will be around $40.00 after you give them your wiper motor. Wiper motor will be located under hood, near firewall, usually in between the two wipers. Instructions are listed below for removal and replacement. REMOVAL: Remove the wiper arm and blade assemblies. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Remove the shroud top vent grill. Tag and disconnect all electrical leads from the wiper motor. Detaching the electrical connector from the wiper motor - 1988 Sunbird shown

Remove the drive link from the wiper motor crank arm. Remove wiper bolts, then remove the wiper motor assembly, guiding the crank arm through the hole. INSTALLATION: Guide the crank arm through the opening in the body and then tighten the mounting bolts to 80 inch lbs. (9 Nm). Install the drive link to the crank arm with the motor in the park position. Installation of the remaining components is the reverse of removal. Hope this helps.. Thanks for using 2carpros.com!
