I have a 92 Pontiac Bonnaville (automatic transmission) with 97000 miles.

It runs smooth, and shifts smoothly and at the right RPM once you get it moving. However when you first put it into gear (reverse or drive) or if you come to a stop from operating at speed, the transmission isn't in gear. It acts like it is in neutral.

Sometimes it will go into gear after a couple seconds after coming to a stop, or you may have to move the gear shift to neutral/park and back to drive to get it to engage. Other times, it seems you can't get it to go into gear regardless of what you do.

Any ideas?

check the transmission fluid level, also smell the fluid if it smells with a burnt smell. would have the fluid changed and a new filter installed.
