I had 1/2 gal. old gas in an 8 gal. can which I filled with new gas and then put into my tank, which was 1/2 full. My thought was that a half gal. of old gas would dillute enough into 17 gals. of good gas so as not to hurt the perfomance, , , , , ,Well obviously I was wrong or I wouldn't be on this site asking for your help at fixing my screw-up with as much do-it myself money saving advice you can give me? ? ? It's only starting with aid of ether, and then,,it's a sputter-flutter contest between me and the throttle. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Sincerely, Chuck Holbrook

Hi Chuck,

when exactly did the problem start? did you drive the car a while before it started or was it there when you went to start car after putting the gas in it.

Cause honestly the 1 gal of old should have been deluted plenty enough.

Another thing the old gas did you check it for water.

Also, is your check engine light on?

Thanks for answering so quickly. We drove about five -six miles before it started sputtering and then died. . after which it took ether to get it going and some well timed pedal fluttering ability by myself(patting my own back-ha) AND I'm sensing that you have a diagnoses because you asked about the check engine light -- and yes it did come on last night for the first time. So You have totally impressed me.Thanks! !

Ok, I will say then that the old gas and new gas mix has nothing to do with the problem. It just ended up a cowinkidink.

Anyhow I would go as far as saying that it is most likely the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). If you are able and it not to far go by your local auto zone or similar and have them pull codes. They will do it for free. This will either confirm that it is the TPS or will give you the problem. Post codes here in forum.
