Transmission problem
1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 6 cyl Automatic 180000 miles

I just recently brought a used '99 Pontiac Grand Prix SE. I've noticed that when I press on the gas the engine will rev up to 3-4k rpm even when it's a light press. The power is also not helping me to maintain my acceleration so I find myself pressing harder on the acceleration to maintain my speed. The problem is intermittent and happens for a few minutes every time I drive. At other times the acceleration is fine and the car only revs around the 2k mark under a light press and I can feel the acceleration translating to the wheels. I'm due for and oil change but I don't think that's the problem. It was suggested that it could be the transmission, transmission fluid (which I checked), or the engine timing belt. Any Ideas or suggestions? My mother had a similar problem with her '97 cutlass but she doesn't remember what she had to do to get it fixed.

Clean out the idle air control valve and test the throttle position sensor and manifold absolute pressure sensor.
