When I start the car in the morning or after shopping at the store and put the transmission in gear (reverse or drive) the car won't move. RPMs go up but transmission is slipping. After idling for about 3min the slipping it no longer present when I put the car in gear. The car drives perfect after that. Shifting is smooth, power and acceleration are great. After driving for about 2hrs on the highway, the fluid overheats. I have replaced the fluid twice and filter once. Took to a local transmission shop and Pep Boys for a flush but they said they couldn't do it due to low line pressure. Neither can explain the initial slipping - great driving - followed by transmission fluid overheating. Both say to replace the transmission. Need answers to the transmission symptoms before I take the $3000 plunge.

Hydraulic pressure is low, caused by a bad/clogged pump, which is causing the slipping.

Look for a used transmission before getting a new one.
