Transmission problem

Just bought this car cheap, seems to shift gears well while driving however, twice after coming to a stop the car acts like it's in nuetral. the first time I put it in park then back into drive and it was fine. the second time it did not work. Had the car in nuetral as my son pushed it into the yard. then I put it into drive just to check..and sure enough the car would move again. what is going on with this thing !
