My car started to make some ratteling noises then lost power quickly. I had it towed to a garage and was told that a piston had broke and that there are metal parts all through the oil and oil all through the engine. The mechanic told me I now need to replace the entire engine to get the car running again. He told me it will cost $500-800 just for the engine (used) and then over $1000 to replace it so I am looking at a minimum of $2000 to get my car back, which I am still making payments on. It's a 3.1 engine. My question is, does the entire engine need replaced or can this be fixed by replacing parts just where the damage was done? How can I lower the cost of this repair?
