Engine Mechanical problem
2001 Pontiac Grand Am Automatic 94,000 miles

I bought a rebuilt 2001 Pontiac Grand Am about 2 years ago... even at that time I noticed an occassional hard shift into 1st gear (Automatic)... Well within the past three months things have been breaking down like crazy... only 3 of the electric windows work (although I can hear the motor whirring)... then... then I noticed a gradual "clunking: into 1st, 2nd, and now third gear... worst of all.. it stalls under 10 miles per hour... so I have to drive two-footed to keep the engine reved enough... Then one day, two weeks ago, the key would not turn... AAA came out and got it started.... but told me to leave the key in the "ACC" position...until I got a new ignition.... Well, eventually I "forgot" about that and took the key out... everything was ok... or at least the same for about a week... then the brand new AAA guarenteed battery died... jump started it and got home ok... but now the Security llight flashes and I can't get the car started.... I towed it to "Tires Plus" who said I have a ECM and BCM problem and this "ma be why I have the gear shift "clank", and the stalling, and the "security/anti-theft problem...

I can buy both the ECM and BCM on the internet for about $100 each ... but... can I do this installation myself?... Do these computer modules need to be "programmed"... Tires Plus said they can't do it... the seller says he doesn't think he can fix it (I'm not sure I believe him)...

Or... do I have to go through a dealer and how much do you think I'll have to pay???

Any guidance will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Paul Layden

The ECM and BCM are just an unplug and replug situation. Any programing needed, they'll take care of by themselves. Both units should be under the glove box.
