Engine problem

I was driviing down the highway today with the cruise control set on 100 Km/h and the car accelerated right up into the red zone on its own and the brakes wouldn't work enough to get it down.Wow was I scared! finally got it over to the side of the road and shut it off. What could be the problem!!!!!! Thanks Kelly So far it's running good without cruise on.
