I have a 1999 pontiac Grand AM and there seems to be about 4 inchs or a bit more of play in the steering when turning to either side. This is my wife's car and i am gone alot for work. You can hear humming like the powwer steering is working but the wheels dont turn in this play area if that makes sense. My wife drives in pretty heaving traffic conditions so the steering play is really concerning me.

More than likely a broken tooth in the rack, cracked housing, or VERY worn pinion.
Have the car serviced ASAP, also inspect the suspension components.
