1999 Pontiac Grand Am gas gauge goes up and down

i have a 1999 grand am, and the fuel gauge goes to the proper level when you first start the war than after that it seems to go to the fuel mark or just all over the place. i put a diagnostics tester on it but it showsas a short some where. i was wondering if this was really the problem, and if you know where the short could be?

well, mine does that too, do you live in a hilly area where the gas gauge will fluctuate? say if you drive up a hill the gas gauge goes down, if you drive down it it will go up, its normal ,same with parking on hills. but if your gas gauge is changing by like quarters of a tank, i suggest you change the gauge
