Brake Lines

I do have a schematic, I can tell you. From the master cylinder, two lines go to the ABS module. From there, you have lines that go to the proportioning valve. Then you have one to each front tire, one to each rear wheel cylinder (or caliper if you have 4 wheel disc). Here is what we have in the diagrams. Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

How do you dissable the antilock braking system?It seems to keep pulsating every time I apply the brakes.

They are supposed to pulse, but if they do it all the time, then most likely you have a warped rotor on one in the front.

You can remove rotors and lay on flat surface and check for any warpage, generally if they are warped they need to be replaced.

No mechanic would disable the ABS system, if you were to get into an accident after disabling system, they could be held responsible.

Have you had the computer scanned?

I had a shop scan it and thay told me that the abs pump was froze up! so i took apart and tested every thing . cleand it real good put it back togeather and the it seems to work just fine. i also did the tests in the book, look at all the wireing.

I'm glad you got it fixed. That is the nice thing about today's cars. The computer can tell you where the problem is coming from most of the time.

sorry i did all that light still on

i changed front pads and rotors, car was on jack stands. after finishing i disengaged the ebrake to take it for a spin, when i put it in reverse at idel speed the car would not move. i jacked up the rear to find the passenger sid rear wheel will not move freely

Is the pump working?

Sounds like the parking brake cable is rusted and stuck in the partially applied position. Look at the cable right in front of the right rear wheel where it exits the casing. If about 1/2" of it is shiny, it's pulled out and not retracting freely. By flexing that casing, the cable might release under spring pressure.

yes the pump is working and i cheacked wheele sensers and all wireing coneters and as much as a ceep manual will take me!

Don't worry. You have been very clear. I hate to say it, but I need you to have the computer scanned again to see if it has the same code. If it was out and working for a short period of time and came back on, there may be a new code.

I don't know if you paid to have it scanned, but most nationally recognized parts stores will do it for free.

I just had new brake pads rotors and calipers replaced, three days later the brake pedal was stuck would not move dwn when I pressed pedal almost hit car in front but swerved to avoid it, is there something the mechanic did not check or is this a new issue?

if was something he did, it would have been evident immediately.

new issue. could be a failed booster. get it checked.

Thanks Roy, it was questionable because after all parts were replaced, had to go back and have brakes adjusted. Was a different mechanic and was not pleased with having to return a second time. Now a third time. Was not sure if it was master cylinder or booster and if it was something overlooked. Now I know I do not have to blast this guy who is a relative.

1996 Pontiac Grand Am 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic

My son has a '96 Pontiac Grand Am. The problem we are having involves the brakes. The brakes went out last June and the car has been sitting until now. The brake pod was empty so I figured he blew another wheel cylinder or popped a line. My son told me that his brakes went out right away not slowly fading. I just finally tried to find out the problem and filled the pod with new brake fluid and pumped the pedal in hopes that I could see where the leak was. When I inspected all areas of the brake lines, calipers and wheel cylinders I could not see any wet areas. Then I checked the brake pod again and noticed that the fluid level had not decreased, not even after pumping the brakes about a hundred times with the car running and with it off. Does anyone know what might be causing this? I thought that maybe it was the master cylinder, but I do not want to mess with the anti-lock brake set up if I don't have to. I am also frustrated by where the original fluid went and why the new fluid won't flow. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as we cannot afford to take it any where to have it looked at since I've been laid off for over a year now. Thanks in advance for any help on this issue!

1995 Pontiac Grand Am 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive

My car's Brake light on the dash came on and by the time I was able to check the brake fluid, it was completely empty. There was no tension on the pedal whatsoever.
I have changed the shoes, pads, drums, and rear lines.
Still cannot get ANY pressure or tension in the pedal.
Any ideas?!?

master cylinder is going to have to be removed from vehicle and bench bleed from there you can attempt to put back on vehicle and bleed the brakes.

How do I bleed the brakes?

You need a helper
or a pressure bleeder
have a helper pump it and pump it the hold
open bleeder and let the air out
do it until no air present in the line
mean while keep eye on fluid level in the master cylinder
if doing 4 tires
start at rear right then front left then rear left front right

I am trying to change the rear brake pads. The pads are into to the drum and I cannot remove the drum. How do I loosen the self adjusting screw when there is no hole or port to access the screw?

Here is a picture of what I gathered off of ALLDATA. There should be a knockout stamped in the drum. The only other option is grinding/shearing off the heads of the holddown pins, or prying until the holdown spring washers pull through.

The car started making noises from the back right side. After looking under the back of the car, there is a line that runs from the left wheel to the right wheel. The right side where the line/wire connects to the right side is hanging down. It looks like it is connected to a ball shaped object. (I'm not sure if thats considered the ball baring or not?)

it sounds like your brakeline or electrical wire may have been partially torn off. Take it to a pro and he can probably get it back on the axle right.

I was bleeding my brakes on my vehicle whichis a 1995 pontiac grand am, and didn't pay attention and bled out the entire reservoir by accident. I filled up the reservoir and now we cannot regain pressure or get fluid threw the forward left line, i know this seems really stupid, but some help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated

remove resevoir and master cylinder from brake booster and crack open all bleeder valves. after that is done bench bleeder master cylinder untill no more air. from there put cylinder back on vehicle. hook up lines and proceed to bleed the brakes. do you have pressure now?
