While I know this car is way overdue to be junked I need transprotation. I recently changed the fuel pump out and now the car is begining to miss bad. The car emits black smoke lightly from the tailpipe. My gas mileage is sucking and I am about financially strapped on this car. I have done research on the EGR valve is there something else I need to check or do that may be causing this problem that is chronic on Grand AM's?

Would that cause black smoke? I know it would cause a miss in the engine.

Chech fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail has a vaccum hose connected. Pull hose if you see fuel in hose replace.

Check the fuel regulator like suggested. A mis-firing condition will cause unburnt fuel to enter the exhaust system. This will destroy the O2 sensors in no time. Do not just leap right in and go changing all kinds of things like the EGR valve. This valve is expensive, and if it is failing there usually is a engine light on. If there is no light on, and the fuel pressure regulator is OK, then let us know what the plugs look like, and test the plug wires.
