Check the linkage to the trans. Have someone move the shifter while you watch the cable. The cable could be loose or binding.

If it checks out, you more than likely have some debris in the valve body/bad pump/govenor and will have to get it to a trans. shop.

With the car in neutral on flat ground , does it roll ok back and forth if it is pushed? just want to make sure it isnt something at the wheels stopping it from moving in D.If it rolls ok, it sounds like something in the trans is broken or is about to give it up and you probably wont be able to fix it in th edriveway. The trans will have to come out of the car and be taken apart to find the problem

The problem ended up to be the rod that will push the park paw into the gear. On the end of the rod GM mushrooms the rod to hold the spring loaded part in place...well the mushroom part wore off so when you tryed to put car in R it would not pull the part out far enough but if you went to Drive it would move alitttle and when the RPM's came up it would pop back and let the car drive. Car is back together now and work's fine. I did this in my driveway took two days but it was worth it. Hope this helps someone out.
