bought the car 3 weeks ago. had the oil changed a week later at a shop. noticed that when I checked the oil a week later, it was low so I added some, and again last week. Took it to the car shop and was told that the piston rings are defective, causing the oil to spray out. They recommend replacing the engine instead, which costs $1,600 and labor at $1,300.

How much oil is it using exactly? Do you notice any blue smoke when starting or driving ? I take it there are no leaks that could cause the loss of oil.

We added 2 quarts of oil, then another 2 a week later. After the initial oil change, we noticed white smoke coming out of the exhaust. We were told that oil may have gotten into the manifold which causes the smoke. It disappeared the next day. No oil leak was noticed when leaving the car parked overnight. No smoke was seen either when driving the car but the driving is sometimes sluggish as if the transmission is slipping.

Have a cylinder leak down test done, that will determine if the rings are bad in the engine, dont bother with a compression test if it is using oil
