1994 Pontiac Grand Am idle

Hello, When I start the motor the idle goes to 1500 rpm or so. It will climb to around 3,000 once warmed up. It will not kick down. I can shut it off and restart it but still high idle. I drive 48 miles to work. The idle is still around 2,000 when I get there. Every once and a while it will idle down. The computer says "Idle position sensor" I replaced that and no change. The code still comes up on the system.

Check throttle linkage, cable and shaft thru butterfly, any binding in these places can cause it...Dissconnect the cable, start and see if it is normal, then hand work the throttle, see if you can close it more. Also the Idle air control valve could be stuck...

I have tried the cable trick. I looked for an adjustment screw to no avail. I pushed on the butterfly and it didnt change the idle. Its like hit and miss, some days it works fine and most (99%) of others it has high idle. Where is the air idle control valve?

I just checked the ICAV and it was loose. I tightened it up and still the same thing. I will replace it and see what happens. I have to replace waterpump now., Hope this is easy. Its a 3100 v6.

I replaced the Idle control sensor. It idled around 900 just fine. Then it went up to 1500, then to 2500 and stayed there. I took the sensor off and screwed the plunger out to where it met the housing. Started it again and idles at 900, then it repeated the above steps in idle. Is there is different sensor telling it to let more air in? The computer keeps retracting the sensor plunger.

You need to use a tech 1 GM scantool to set the idle, PCM will not learn correct idle position until this is done...If Iac or TPS is replaced, it must go through a relearn...
