Engine problem
2000 Pontiac Firebird 6 cyl Wheel Drive Type unknown Automatic 103000 miles

I was driving in the rain and went through some pretty deep puddles when I lost my steering. My 'check gages' light turned on so I thought I was out of ...something. Looked under the hood and realized the belt had come off. Why did this happen? Did the weather or my having low oil have anything to do with it, or do these things just happen? Managed to get it back on BUT can it happen again and do I need to replace somethnig?
