2000 Pontiac Firebird engine runs when key is all the way t

the engine will run only while you hold the key in the start position. when you let go of the key as you should do to disingage the starter, the engine shuts off. As long as you hold the key in the start position and the starter is engaged the engine runs. Whats is up with that?
