2000 Pontiac Firebird Belt Squealing

Hi Guys,
It sounds like my fan belt is squealing but i'm not quite sure becaue there are 2 belts, one bigger and one smaller. I've replaced the idler pully hoping that it would fix the problem but the noise has remained. The noise comes and goes. After the car has been sitting for a couple hours or more, there is no squeek but after driving for maybe 20 minutes the squeek comes back and progressivly gets worse. I've sprayed the belt with belt dressing and have even replaced it but it made no difference. Thank you for your time and hopefully we can get this problem fixed!

Hello –

To better assist you is your model just the Firebird, or the Formula or the Trans AM and what is the engine size in liter?

Also, please give me the 4th digit of your VIN……….

Hi,
My model is the firebird formula and it has the 5.7 litre. The fourth digit in the VIN is a "F".

Hello - Thanks for the information Derek. Well.....the main problem I have right now is our manual only shows one belt - a serpentine belt. I have attached the pic showing with or without AC.

It sounds more like it may be a bearing going out.......thus the making noise once it has ran for a little. Please tell me on the two belts.......what each belt goes around.......... My suggestion is to run the engine until the noise starts and is steady..........then take off one belt quickly and start the engine and run it for just a few seconds and see if the noise is there. Then put that belt back on and run the engine.......when you get the noise then stop and remove the other belt and see if the noise is there only for a few seconds. Hopefully the noise will be there with one of the belts off. Then at least you would know the items we are dealing with. Please let me know what you find out. I will give you a few more ideas here but still let me know. You can get one of the auto stethoscopes below at Auto Zone and put the tip near the moving pulley. BE CAREFUL THE PULLEYS ARE MOVING. With both belts on and engine running you may be able to find the exact noise pulley.....because it will be much louder than the others.

Also, with the belts off.....spin each pulley.....it should spin freely and quietly, no noise or roughness.......etc.........make sure the engine has ran awhile..........remember it only make the noise when heater up. Also, does it sound like a belt squeal like it is slipping or mechanical? Look at your belts really close.....are they worn, stretched...........if the belts are worn they may stretch and then slip......... Next.......your belt tensioner........it has a spring.........after working it may get weak and start to not keep the proper pressure on the belt.....thus the slip.......... Let me know what you find out
