1986 Pontiac Fiero Check engine light

1986 Pontiac Fiero 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 190k miles

My check engine light comes on after 3 or 4 minutes of driving, and comes on while idling at a drive thru or a stoplight. How do I know what is going on with it??

In the center console behind cigarette lighter is the ALDL (Assembly Line Diagnostic Link).

Remove lighter and cover (two Torx screws) and you will see ALDL. Short terminals A and B, the only two terminals next to each other (with female connections).

Use paper clip to short, turn ign. "ON" do not start. The SES light will blink code 12 (flash..pause..flash,flash). It will do this 3 times, then display error codes, when all codes have been displayed it will return to code 12.
