Engine Mechanical problem

So, my mom and her friend were driving my '86 Fiero, and they said that smoke started coming out of the engine. When they checked it, our car-fixing friend said that the gasket had blown, and possibly the head. My boyfriend said it would probably be cheaper just to get another engine, which sounds fine, but I don't know what to look for in an engine, or if it would be okay to get another brand of engine for my car. Should I get another engine of the same brand, or would it be okay to get another brand? What should I look for in an engine so I don't get ripped off?
