Pontiac Bonneville "thump" or "knock" wh

I've noticed a faint but clear knocking sound coming from the front left wheel area when turning left - usually when i make a hard left or when i hit a dip in the road.

The knocking isn't regular, but seems to follow the road surface, so almost like a steering component is hitting another part of the car as the wheel/arm/driveshaft travels up & down with the steering wheel at that position.

Any thoughts / opinions much appreciated.

You may very well have a steering component problem, but I would still recommend taking a look at your front drive axles. The rubber 'boots' that cover the CV joints can split/break and expose the CV to the elements. When a CV joint starts getting 'dry', it MAY start making noise (especially common when the wheels are turned). The normal 'noise' heard when this condition is present it a clicking sound.

it doesn't happen all of the time, and the cv boot is not damaged. it almost sounds like something is loose and banging against the wheel when turning while moving. or when i hit a dip in the road.
