Cheap is not always good with exhausts, There are generic catalytic converters, that's not a problem, the interconnection pipes will be a standard shape and size, so you will have to make sure the cat is a comparable size to what you have now. The muffler will also be generic but ask for a better quality, a bit more spent here will pay off in the long term, as for clamps and gaskets off the shelf will be fine, just don't use a sealant up stream of the cat, as silicon based sealants are detrimental to there operation, just use the gasket supplied.

As long as the universal fit, is just that, and you wont know until you try it on, go for that, just be careful about the relevant size of the muffler as it may say universal, but it may not have the same clearance as the original and touch somewhere when driving on rough roads. Take a few basic measurements and compare before committing your self.

Any possible way you could tell me just exactly you would order for the muffler to be replaced? Just the muffler and required brackets? I'm not a mechanic but give me the correct parts and I can put it together easily. I would greatly appreciate it. My daughter doesn't need a ticket for such an older car.

If the pipes are ok, just order the muffler, have a good look at any rubber mounts, if they look cracked order them as well. if the muffler is flange mounted order gaskets, if slip joints order new clamps, that should get you out of trouble,
