Clicking noise

I have a 1995 Plymouth Voyage with about 150,000 miles on it. I thought I might be having battery issues. But this morning, my van would not start and when I popped the hood there was a clicking noise coming from a plastic box just above the battery. It seems to have, what look like, large fuses. Can you please tell me what this box is and what might be causing the clicking noise.

That would be the relay box. There is a relay that is activating.

Thanks. I appreciate the response. My van is now totally dead in my driveway. The battery died earlier today and it had to be jump started. Then I went and had the battery tested and the battery was fine, but they had to attatch an additional battery in order for it to start. Said it might be the starter. I made it home but it will not start again.

Well...looks like i have the same problem: have a 1999 Plymouth Voyager 3.3l, around 120,000 and after i changed the battery (with a brand new one!)...a noise came from under the hood, like a knocking, and the car doesn't want to start anymore. Not even if jumped.At first thought is the timing chain but engine crank manually .Someone said it may be a relay or the starter. Didn't check any of them yet. If i will figure the problem, i will let you know, maybe is the same thing!

To test a relay you can swap them with a similiar one.

It very well may not be. Since it isn't cranking(turning over) but power is getting to the relay, there is a half assed test you can try. With someone Holding the key in the crank position, you tap on the starter with a hammer or similiar to jar the starter. IF it then cranks, you have your answer. Also be sure the connections at the starter, battery and ground cables are clean, and tight, Should see no green at all.

Like i promised, back here to update you..I was able to make the car run again thanks to the people here.. So..i went outside, took off the relay that makes the noise, ( auto shut down relay) wait a while then..put it back. The noise disappeared but the car didn't want to start..later,someone send me to the BCM, inside of the car, next to the brake pedal..well..i went to to the car, looked and i saw a box with fuses and relay (no idea if that is the bcm but..) one by one, I took everything out of there, wait few sec and put it back. then try to start the car..at first didn't start but looked like it will so, turn off the key, then on again and..the car started. Hopfully will work for you too...good luck!

So I pulled out my starter relay fuse, waited for a few minutes then tried to start it...didn't start. I pulled the auto shut down relay, waited a few minutes then tried to start it...didn't start. Pulled a few fuse on the inside fuse panel, waited a few minutes...again didn't start. But I noticed a sulfur smell coming from my battery...what does this mean?

not sure..I am changing the battery terminals and changing the battery with a new one I bought a couple of weeks ago and see if that changes anything

IF there is a way for you to keep power to the computer with a jump box it may save you a little greif.
RAdio/clock presets, the issue that DanaG1 was having for example. It sounds like a logical thing to do, make sure the cables don't have any green corrosion in them, go back an inch or two into the sheathing.

Well FORTUNATELY my van is fixed!!! It was as simple as cleaning off the terminals and posts of the battery!!!.I am however going to replace the positive cable and terminal this week to prevent any further corrosion and STRESS!!! I truely appreciate all the input from this website. I will definately come back here for any further xcar trouble I have. Thanks a lot everyone!!!
