What would cause the rpm level of my vehicle to run higher than normal level when driving?
Could it be a low level of transmission fluid or what other thing could I check?

Not sure how you could relate an engine problem to the transmission. Start by looking for a vacuum leak. This could be a disconnected or brittle / broken / cracked rubber or plastic hose, but more commonly a cracked intake manifold gasket. You might find it by squirting water around the gaskets while the engine is running and still cold. The vacuum leak will suck the water in and the engine speed will slow down.
