Smells problem
2000 Plymouth Voyager Front Wheel Drive Automatic 160000 miles

This isn't really a gas smell but a gas leak problem. I have had this van since feb 2008 and in the past two months all the gas has leaked out of it. It happens when I start the car to let it warm up. The first time it happened I thought I ended up with a gas leak in the gas tank so I have only been filling it up with 10 dollars at a time which gives me about a half tank. I went out this morning and started the car and all the gas leaked out, again. There was only about 1/4 tank or so in it this time.

I am really stumped with this issue. I have had it checked and there is no wetness to indicate where the leak could be coming from.

Like I said this is the second time in about two months maybe a little less. Any ideas on what I should be checking for or what could be causing this to happen?

Get a locking gas cap somebodys siphoning your gas.

We have thought about that but the only problem with that is the gas doesn't leak until the car is started and this morning there was only about 5 minutes were the car was unattended. So there wasn't time for someone to come and get the gas. And the gas is all over the ground.

This only seems to happen when the weather is very very cold. It was minus 15 here over night. My husband is thinking that the cold weather might have something to do with this.

Leaks only when running then it must be in fuel lines . Where on vehicle is it leaking rear, mid or front.
Have you looked in engine compartment under car. You need to find leak in order for me to help

Thank you for taking the time to try and help me. Like I said the car has only leaked gas twice in like two months and it is leaking back by the gas tank. We are thinking the leak has to be in the gas line above the tank. It is just very odd that it doesn't leak all the time and it isn't really a leak when it decides to go it is what ever gas I have in the tank at the time comes out. It takes a little while to get it started, of course but than I get it started and take it to the gas station and put a few dollars of gas in it and it is fine.

Think I know what is happening. Does it leak only when it is cold like the 15 deg you mentioned? if yes the type of fuel line connector that is used has a plastic lock clip that might be affectied by cold temps and fail. Then the pump would dump fuel on ground.

Yes it seems to only have happened when the temp has dropped way below freezing. I will metion what you said to the hubby because he was going to look at it over the holiday break and see if he couldn't figure it out.
