Transmission problem - 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic 172000 miles

I have searched for days and even called the dealer parts shop trying to determine the difference between:

a) a park/neutral position switch
b) a transmission range sensor
c) a neutral safety switch.

I got a code P1899 on my Plymouth Grand Voyager Espresso w/ 3.3 L engine. 4 speed automatic(or at least I believe it's a 4 speed. Indicator shows PRND3L).

Is there a difference between these parts? Also, given the code P1899, which should I replace. The dealer parts shop nor the local Autozone could confirm which part I need. Help!!!

If the vehicle doesn't have either; then, what would code P1899 mean? The shift indicators are flashing and the trip as well as the trac off lights are coming on.

This transmission range sensor is the neutral safety switch all wrapped up into one. Here is a guide on how to service the transmission and replace the sensor (Below)

Please let us know what happens so it will help others.

Cheers, Ken

that is a picture of a trans with 4speed auto, my 3 speed auto on the front only has the neutral saftey switch and the lock up switch located directly behind the fill tube, the reason i'm looking for one is i've replaced the out put speed sensor and still have speed sensor failure code not sure the 3 speed even has one.

Sorry for delay in responding... Ok, I take it you have cleared the code after replacing the sensor. Have you look on the fire wall side on top of the axle housing for the Speed sensor? Here is a diagram...
