Transmission problem
1997 Plymouth Voyager 6 cyl Front Wheel Drive Automatic
----------------------------------------------------------------
I have a 1997 voyager with a 3.0 v-6, 3 speed automatic transmission. the problem i am having is the solonoid that controls the torque convertor isnt working anymore. All i get is 1st thru 3rd. I want to know how to replace this. What exactly do i take off to get to it, as i have another transmission thats the exact same one, but no knowledge of how to remove and replace it. Thanks in advance if anyone can help me.

Hello,

The TCC is located next to the Tranny Dipstick.
and I believe it has to be removed from the inside.

One thing confuses me thought... you say the TCC isn't working but yet you also say the you have 1st - 3rd and it is a 3 speed tranny. So I really don't get the problem.

Does the tanny shift normally? If not what exactly is it doing?

I am not trying to be a smart butt... You just state you have a 3 speed tranny you have 1st - 3rd but you TCC isn't working.

correct, its a 3 speed transmission with a lock up torque convertor and it shifts into "overdrive" at 40-45 mph. Its not a true 4 speed, but when i am driving, it shifts from 1st to 3rd, then i use to feel a little bump when it reached 40-45 mph.
When I first drive it, if its been sitting all night, i go down the road and it shifts 1-3, then i feel a little bump, and i can hear a change in the engine rpms. Once its warmed up, i it will shift 1-3, but i dont feel that bump, and the rpms dont change.
Is it something that has to do with the turque convertor solonoid that controls that and can quit working once it warms up? As i said, it works when its cold, but once its warm it will shift fine from 1-3, but i dont feel that extra bump. Do you better understand my problem now? I am going on vacation in 2 months, and i'm driving almost 800 miles one way, and i dont want to have any problems with it.
Can this be my problem? and if so, how do i fix it?
Please help. Thanks in advance.

OK, Yes better under standing.

Is your check engine light? If so have codes pulled. With that year your tranny should set codes. If no codes it is probably internal. Also when was your last transmission service, filter and fluid change?

No "Check Engine" light is on, it came on a while ago, and shut off by itsself. My last filter and fluid change was 15k miles ago. It should have a while to go before i have to change it again right? How do i get to it? Do i have to drop the pan? I know how to do that, i just dont know if i have to remove the valve body, or if the bolt or nut that holds it on is just inside the pan. I have another transmission i can use for parts if i have to. Thanks in advance.

Yes you will have to drop the pan and I believe the valve body has to come off. I honestly am drawing a blank right now, I can check tomorrow and let you know tomorrow afternoon. Or since you have another tranny you could pull the pan off it and find out for sure. The reason I say tomorrow is because I work for the county as an Emergency Medical Technician and I am working today 6/17 and I work a 24 hour shift 8am - 8am.

I have a tranny for that Vehicle I just replace one for a customer. They are not too bad as long as you have the right equipment.
