The upper strut mount has a bearing that allows the assembly to turn freely while holding the weight of the vehicle. When worn, they will cause the strut to bind when you turn the steering wheel. Typically, the only symptom is a banging sound when you turn the steering wheel when the vehicle is standing still. You can verify this by holding your fingertips on the top of the coil spring while a helper turns the steering wheel. You'll feel it bind and snap free. This doesn't happen when moving because the road vibration helps the bearing turn.
In the worst case, a binding strut mount will cause "memory steer". This is where the steering wheel will stay where you put it rather than returning to straight ahead by itself. After making a turn, you will have to physically turn the steering wheel back to the straight ahead position.
