We have a 1994 Grand Voyager that would not start. It made grinding noises so we thought it was a bad starter, but then the grinding stopped and we thought it was a bad timing belt. The mechanic determined that the timing belt is fine but the distributor is cracked - not the distributor cap but the distributor itself is cracked. Waht can cause this?

it can crack from a frozen bushing in the distributor causing it to crack.
