1993 Plymouth Voyager car runs bad and the coil blowes

I had a used motor installed and now it runs lousy and the coil will get hot on the cyl 5 and 2 end and crack and then blow a hole in the plastic. Then the white fusable link will get hot and start smoking.
what could the mechanic have done? Can you install the flexplate wrong so the timing is off

May have not hooked up engine grounds. Did it run like that when you picked it up? Is shop rechecking there work?

I am a retired tech, with medical issues. The guy is a neighbor and did it real cheap. he doesn't want to know. I checked all the grounds and wire connectors and vacuum lines. would the eng run if the flex plate was put on wrong

Flex plate has nothing to do with timing only coupled crank to trans and provides gear for starting. Was used motor compression checked? What is voltage at coil? check engine light on? Was engine compatable to year,trans and computer?

This has a crank sensor bolted to the tranny bellhousing and reads 3 groups of marks that are each 20degrees apart.
