P1391 Intermittent Loss of CMP

Electrical problem 4 cyl Front Wheel Drive Manual 178k miles

How do i fix or repair a code P1391 (Intermittent Loss of CMP or CKP) ? Sometimes the car runs fine, then will start chugging and die. This has happened at different times and conditions. I can jump start the car and it will run a little choppy, and other times it starts right up and runs smooth ? Is this possibly an electrical problem ?

Hello,

This is a camshaft sensor communication problem which can be solved by replacing the sensor in most cases. Here is a guide to help you see what you are in for when doing the job.

Here are some diagrams to show you ho the repair will be on your car.

Install target magnet in end of camshaft. Tighten mounting screw to 3 Nm (30 in lb) torque.
Install camshaft position sensor. Tighten sensor mounting screws to 9 Nm (80 in lb) torque.

Fixed my problem by replacing the crankshaft sensor BTW

It must be a connection problem can you inspect the connector to make sure there are no bad wires or corrosion on the terminals?

A mechanic said he did that. I think its a broken flex plate :(

Thank you makes my job easier. This sounds like you have a timing belt tensioner that has gone bad which can cause the camshaft to be out of time intermittently which will cause the code. Please check the timing belt and tensioner here are diagrams and a guide to help you see whats going on.
