1994 Plymouth Acclaim Lost Power

Driving along and all of a sudden the engen would not power the car . slowed down to 5 mph and that was as fast as the car would go . I put in a new fuel pump and new fuel filter . Checed the throttle body fuel injector and it seems to be pumping . EGR valve moves freely . I can start the car and it will idel , however when giving it gas in park it will hesitate and die out . getting some backfiering , and the Cat is glowing red hot .
have any ideas ?

the timeing is ok . it does jump due to the eradic ideling . is there a way to test the throttle positioning sensor?

If u think its the TPS you can use a volts meter to check the volts as paddle pressed the volts should go up
and to a wide throttle volts 4.9V


I would suspect MAP sensor before the TPS
disconnect TPS does it start and run (it should )


check timing belt if slipped a notch or so
check dist.and timing

you said that the fuel pump is new
what do u have for fuel pressure ?

The throttle positioning sensor like you had said during idle and unpluggin made no differance ,. However when probing it I get an on or off . no variation in voltage . and it just spikes at 12 volts then down to zero . then to 12 and back to zero .

Something is wrong here !! 5 volts should be and no more at idle it should be less then 1volt and as you increases the throttle volts should go up no more then 5 volts are u sure you are testing the TPS and if so you should have a check engine light with a TPS code cycle key on off on off on off on with in 5 sec check engine light blink codes (* ** code 12 ***** ***** code 55 ) and so on check the TPS harness and plug

Your right the TPS is functioning correctly .
