last time puttng gas in my car i noticed i was leaking coolant. since then i havent noticed any leaking but now while driving within 5 miles the heat gauge starts at the normal position but slowly rises to the hot position. when it gets to the hot position it immediatly shoots back to a normal position. within the next week i'm planning to flush the coolant and replacing it, and also replacing the thermostat. i have the parts bought and am all ready, just dont have the time yet. does this sound like the right thing to do to fix the problem? i'm only out $15 so its no big deal and i'm sure my car could use a coolant flush and new thermostat anyway, but what else could it be doing this? also trying to prevent the car from overheating, which to my knowledge this car has never overheated, i noticed that driving at or below 40mph the heat gauge stays in a normal position.

Hi:
I think you have a good place to start. If that doesn't take care of the problem, let me know and we'll go from there.
