Pitman Arm

I had a pitman arm that was stuck on pretty good. So, I cut into it and was then able to get it off with a puller. Finally, success after messing with it for hours with no luck. However, when I looked up, I saw a slice in the pitman arm shaft gear. I had cut it too deep. I was wondering if it was a big enough deal to have to replace the whole box. Thanks.

It's not a good thing but it really isn't going to be a big problem as the new arm will bridge the cut and still be solid on the shaft. I would clean the shaft off and inspect the seal, then take a file and dress the edges of the splines so they are smooth. Then install the replacement arm. Be sure to center the wheels and the steering wheel so the steering box is centered.
