2004 Peugeot 206 Faulty breaks

I own a Peugeot 206 SW 1.4 5 Dr.

It has recently started making a loud noise, which
increases when I step on break. It also takes a short
while before I can stop the car.

Hope this information is enough to diagnose a
possible cause for this problem and how much
should it cost to be repaired.
