Thank you for posting your question on 2CarPros!
So I am going to lead off with a question: Did your key you lost have a large and thick gray head on it? If the answer is yes, then your Durango does require a chip key.
If the answer is no, then it may not have a chip key, and your problem may be that your security system needs to be reset. Follow the directions on the link below in order to help that.

The anti-theft key system does prevent the car from starting and running. The description you gave (starts for a couple seconds and shuts off) is what the anti-theft system would do without the proper chip.
There are aftermarket bypass features available, but I do not recommend them (I am a locksmith). Not only does it make your vehicle easier to steal, but these systems can cause no-start situations when their modules go bad.
My advice is to contact a local Dodge dealer with your VIN number and have them double check whether this vehicle takes a chip key. At that point, you would either need to contact a qualified local locksmith, or have your vehicle towed to a dealer. If the new lock you purchased has a chip key, it will need to be programmed to the vehicles computer. If not, you will need to get a different lock.
Best of luck, and if we can be of any more help, please let us know! Again, thank you for choosing 2CarPros!
