Air conditioner fan issue

My car has two cooling fans. The driver side is bigger. When I turn my air conditioner on the passenger side fan does not go on and the driver side runs on maximum speed. It has never done this before. I also notice the cooling does not work like it did before, but still manage to cool but longer. I think the driver side fan is picking up slack working twice as hard and I fear it my damage it.
