Dashboard message door is open when it is not

That would indicate that the door latch switch signal is not correct. It is built into the door latch actuator mechanism. It could be the switch itself or there may be a broken wire between the door and the A-pillar in the wiring harness. Because you also say it sometimes will not lock I would suspect the broken wire more.
Repair involves removing the door panel, the passenger kick panel trim and the accordion boot between the door and pillar and searching the harness for the broken wire(s).
