Code P0335, "VSC, and VSC off" lights at the same time?

I bought yet another car, and after a couple hundred miles, I get a check engine light (P0335), "VSC, and VSC off" lights all at the same time.
I would normally assume the knock sensor or its wiring, but since I have the other 2 lights with it, I have to suspect it might be something else?
Where should I start?

Hi,

The code is related to the crankshaft position sensor. I don't feel the vehicle stability control is connected other than the computer is shutting it down.

The code P0335, is specific. It indicates there is no crankshaft position sensor signal. I would start by either testing or replacing the sensor and see if that helps. In most cases, it is a faulty sensor. see pic below.

Oh, shoot, I'm sorry, it's not p0335, it's p0325 - knock sensor 1.

Yep, the 325 is the knock sensor. To be more specific, there is no signal from it. However, I don't feel that it is tied into the VSC. I guess indirectly, there could be an issue within the ECM that is setting both, but it's unlikely.

A knock sensor is used to finetune the ignition timing. With the code you have, it could be caused by a few things. See pic 1 below.

Is this the only code present? Do you have any misfire codes? Is the ABS light turning on?

Intermittently, I also get p0330, for the other knock sensor. No other codes arise and no ABS light, and the ABS is functioning.

Hi,

Since the two are controlled by different circuits, I think the best thing to do would be to start making sure connections are clean and tight. There is a chance that we have a weak connection at the PCM and confirm the knock sensors are tight.

Let me know your thoughts and if you are comfortable performing those checks.
